Statement
Fear comes in many shapes and forms. One form of fear that everyone is afraid of is dying, or more specifically being killed. Freddy vs. Jason, a film released in 2003 and produced by Ronny Yu, converts the nightmares of serial killers to realty. The film connects to our course questions undoubtedly by touching upon the fears that society has. Freddy and Jason wreak havoc in the town of Springwood, Ohio. Two powerful killers are up against each other, but during their fight, they slaughter whoever gets in their way. By terrorizing the town, Freddy and Jason quickly earn the title of monsters and misfits. They both aren’t your normal serial killers. Technically they’re both already dead. Freddy’s whole body is burnt and has half human parts, with a hand of knives. This causes him to be a misfit. Jasons face is deformed from drowning when he was a kid, so he looks like no other which also makes him a misfit. In the beginning of the film no one believes the kids when they speak out about the horrific and hideous serial killers. Society even sends one kid to an insane asylum. This casts the kids as being strange and crazy, causing them to be seen also as misfits, Our society has a deep fear of occurrences that we have no control in, in this film, it has a deep connection to that fear. Freddy and Jason destroy lives and destroy homes, and the people in their path have no way of protecting themselves. The terrors committed by Freddy and Jason relate to real life fears of serial killers. The series of movies about both characters are around the time period of infamous serial killers in the real world.
I really enjoyed the film, there’s many parts that are really well produced and acted. I loved how they tied in Freddy as being powerless from the previous movie. It caused the audience to feel more powerful and gave hope for the characters fighting against him. Another aspect of the film I loved is how they portray Freddy in many different disguises to confuse Jason in their fight. There’s nothing I dislike about the film but certainly some things I would change. I would want more background on how Will and his friend got put in the insane Asylum. For an adaptation I would create, I would rather see Freddy kill Jason since I believe Freddy is the more powerful one. In the film, Jason when’s the fight with the help of the kids.
Changing the setting would change everything because the setting is what decides the characters fate. Crystal Lake is the place Jason died when he was a little kid. In order to make him weak, Freddy brings Jason to Crystal Lake during their fight. If that never happened who knows what would have happened in the fight. Also Springwood, Ohio is where Freddy started his adventures of killings. With the setting taking place here also gives Freddy power to do his own killings.
In my adaptation I will have Freddy win the fight between him and Jason. Instead of Freddy being taken from haunting people in their dreams and coming to reality, he will be able to attack Jason in his sleep. The trick is how will Freddy be able to get Jason to dream. Considering he doesn’t sleep, but is consistently on the move. That’s the adaptation I will explore in the rest of my project.
